Pousadas of Portugal - discover the Pousadas with Algarve Retreats
What are they? The Pousadas of Portugal are a chain of over 40 exclusive hotels, located throughout Portugal. The word pousada comes from the Portuguese verb pousar meaning to rest, to spend the night and the Pousadas had their origin in the 1940's when the first Regional Pousadas were built to provide visitors with board and accommodation in keeping with the style and traditions of each region. In the fifties, a new concept of a Pousada was created: the Historic Pousada, located in carefully restored monuments - an option with a difference for the tourist. Situated in castles, monasteries, fortresses and places of special natural beauty from the north to the south, the Pousadas are real treasures of Portuguese history. Respect for the architectural heritage has been shown when restoring buildings to adapt to the modern demands of comfort.
The Pousadas used to be classified into the two basic categories of Historical and Regional but to make it easier to distinguish between the choice of Pousadas available, new themes have been introduced. The Pousadas are now divided into the following groups:
Historic Pousadas, Historic Design Pousadas, Nature Pousadas and Charm Pousadas.
The Pousadas are famous for their rich and varied gastronomy and you can be sure of finding the best regional specialities, accompanied by one of the many splendid Portuguese wines.
Algarve Retreats is pleased to announce that we are now able to help you plan and book your Pousada stay and shortly will be including a new section on our web site which is devoted to the Pousadas of Portugal. It is planned to have individual descriptions and photos of each Pousada in order to give you all the information you need to make your choices.
