Where to eat in the Algarve, Portugal

Restaurante O Antonio in Praia da Luz

On our last visit to Luz we were tempted to visit restaurant `O Antonio' which has the motto; `The restaurant that was missing in Luz…..', well, we were pleased that we found it!

Situated half way up the Rua da Praia on the left hand side, Restaurante O Antonio is a delightful eatery with about 20 covers.

On our entry to claim our reserved table, our attention was captured by a refrigerated display of fresh fish which proved very tempting to our party of four.  A bottle of house red - Alentejo Couteiro-Mor (€8.50) and a beer helped us to make our choices.

The selection of starters included the traditional as well as some fresh new ideas.  The fish soup (€2.95), an old favourite, contained large pieces of white fish enhanced with the use of coriander.  A local favourite Flambé Sausage on a traditional brown dish was quite spectacular as it was in flames on delivery (€3.50).  A very tasty tomato and mozzarella salad anointed with basil oil at €4.50 and an excellent Salad Rucola (€5.50) made the four.  This salad had a splendid mix of flavours which was much sampled by us all.  Who would think that feta cheese, mango, Parma ham and rocket, colourfully garnished with grated carrot and vine tomatoes, could taste soooo good.

We eagerly anticipated the arrival of our Main Courses as the starters were all most enjoyable.

A Monkfish kebab was the first selection; this was served with prawns, peppers and onions on the spear at €16.  A roast pork shank (€8.50) served with roast potatoes, courgettes, carrots and broccoli proved a very substantial meal indeed!  Roasted sea trout served with roast potatoes, vegetables as before and bacon was excellent value at €8.50 and the grilled halibut steak (€12) was served with a colourful salad of tomato, lettuce, onion, cucumber and carrots.  All plates were returned to the kitchen with only the bones remaining!!

The temptation of home made puddings resulted in the arrival of a `Molotov' (€4), a meringue and caramel confection and an apple pie (€5.50), served with a rather superior crème anglaise, ice cream and cream.  A very piquant lemon tart (€4.25) was declared sublime, the 2 spoons/pudding came into play - not a crumb remained…………..
